Welcome to the new home of Gurkha, Robert J. Brodey’s third novel, an historical fantasy set in Nepal, 1914.

GURKHA (gur-kuh) n.
Nepalese warriors sworn to protect the world from demons [mythic]; A Nepalese soldier in the British or Indian army [contemporary].

Set in 1914 in the mighty Himalaya mountains, Gurkha is an epic historical fantasy following a proud young woman, Devi, and her battle with the shape-shifting demon, Mahisha, who haunts the isolated valleys. But Devi soon finds her fight is not on one front alone. When the British arrive unannounced, she is thrust into a new world where many more troubling life and death choices must be made. From grappling with restless demons to the bleak horrors of trench warfare during World War I, Gurkha is a mythical journey exploring the vengeful darkness of grief, the rise of Nepali hillmen as legendary soldiers, and the search for the divine here on earth.

Please note: This book is appropriate for ages 15+ and contains references to war, violence, and colonial racism, which some may find upsetting.

Learn more about the Gurkhas:

The videos below were originally filmed by writer and photographer Robert J. Brodey in Nepal in 2006 when he, producer Michael Carter, and artist Romelle Espiritu travelled there to do research in support of the development of a feature animated movie about a “Gurkha girl.” To date, the film has not been produced, but Robert transformed the screenplay into an historical fantasy novel. The videos give a little taste of what they saw and who they met, which greatly informed both the film script and the novel.

In this video, Robert J. Brodey discusses the trip to Nepal in 2006 that solidified the story that was to become the historical fantasy novel, Gurkha.
